Music, the universal language! If the human race can communicate through words, I believe that, many times, music has been just more efficient at that! The scope of music is so immensely broad that I will just try to bring my own experience into this post. Just think about it! How many times have you been stressed out, being worried, sad or just angry, then you happen to hear that song that made you forget it all for a moment, see those memories come back to you, made you cry, laugh, made you think about that loved one, your parents, your friends, those that are gone, etc? If none of these apply to you, or just haven’t experience it yet, I invite you to stop for a moment, find a good time and place and just listen to something you really like, maybe that artist you haven’t played for years, or the soundtrack of that movie that changed your insides long, long ago.

I’m not quite sure how it works, but if there’s magic in this world it has to do with music for sure! Have you ever thought about it? So many human emotions trapped on twelve notes! Some obvious examples: Love songs for romance, national anthems to express pride and love for your country, sensual music for certain times, religious music to connect with the divine, spiritual music for mantras and meditation, happy songs to celebrate, party and enjoy yourself, martial music for military matters, sad melodies for a funeral, the list goes on and on! We use music as a real alternative to spoken language everywhere, everyday!

While I surely tried 🙂 , I was never really talented at making music (I briefly played the electric bass guitar when I was a teen). I admire and respect those who are. Have been pleasantly surprised by my own son, who plays percussion, and can actually read and understand musical notes. I certainly have been a fan of music my entire life. From classical to rock, punk, electronic, new age, progressive and hip hop. Folk music and instrumental music. Jazz, Flamenco, Mariachi, Fado. No limits, no ending.!

There’s also a therapeutic side in the form of music therapy. Claudia Samano L. discusses on her dissertation (2003) that (while listening to music) not just the hearing, but all of our senses are actually engaged on it. Most dance wouldn’t exists without music. If you believe in God, I believe that music, our ability to make it, should be seen as a gift to man coming from heaven. If you don’t, you still have to agree with me in the fact that music actually does much more good than harm to mankind, and is truly an invaluable gift to all of us. Sometimes I wish that less words and more music would take place among us. I invite you to reflect on how music has impacted your life, just as mine has. Perhaps many of our present problems wouldn’t exist if more music and less speeches were applied. Maybe when humanity fades away, thousands of years from now, our true and only legacy as a species will be just that: The power of music.
